Shunting on the road next to us gives a rare left side view of our work.

Under the right footplate, looking across the engine. |

|
The water scoop inlet at the rear of the tender.
Travelling at (reduced) speed, express engines could scoop up water at strategically placed water troughs, to save the laborious business of stopping and filling from a water crane. |

Tender brake cylinder piston rod.
When this is drawn up, the tender brake gear move and the brake blocks push against the wheels. |

Vacuum Pump
This cylinder in the top of the picture is the vaccum pump, and takes its drive off the inside right cylinder. When the loco is in motion it helps maintain the brake vaccum, reducing the use of the ejector. |

Drive for the mechanical lubricator.
The rocking of the valve gear provides an action that drives the mechanical lubricator via an arm. (View from beneath) |

Under the inside cylinders.
Note the three draincocks on the right cylinder. Two are for the opposite ends of the cylinder, but the third collects water from the valve inlet space. |

Lovely job!
