The complex arrangement of the pistons and valves on 6023 has necessitated some of the most challenging work on the engine. The two obvious outer cylinders drive pistons that act on the central set of wheels. Concealed between the engine's frames, two inner cylinders drive cranks set into the mid axle of the first set of driving wheels.

The outer left-hand piston, with valve above.

The outer right hand piston, from the rear.

An outer piston bore being cleaned and oiled to receive its piston.

A piston having its rings wedged in with paper to stop them popping out while it is being guided into the cylinder.

Left cylinder waiting to receive its piston.

The pistons weigh a great deal and take several men to lift them.

Last view of the bare cylinder!

The grease monkey tries to keep his hair clean.

Waiting for the big push?

The left hand piston after insertion into the cylinder and mating with the crosshead.

Banging the crosshead home.

Lifting the connecting rod into place.

The connecting rod being slid into the left crosshead.

Final adjustments to the crank end of the rod.

All held in place by a pin!

Job done.

Left piston, crosshead and connecting rod now connect to the centre set of wheels.

The right cylinder piston awaiting connection to the crosshead.

The inner cylinders from the front of the engine.

Note the left (right in this view) piston is in place.

Both pistons in place.

A gizmo.

Unfortunately, there isn't room to swing a treetrunk in order to drive the concealed inner crosshead onto the end of the piston, so this miracle of engineering design was used to jack the piston in tight using a hydraulic bottle jack.

Hammering in the gudgeon pin whilst the piston is compressed by the 'gizmo'

Success. Pin fitted.

The device off the engine - note the bottle jack.

View forward towards the inner cylinders, from between the inner connecting rods. Note the black crossheads.

With the boiler off, the inner cranks and valve eccentrics are visible.
