A handful of express locomotives equalled the tractive effort of the Kings, and all benefited from the 'King' design.

On the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, Sir William Stanier's 'Princess Royal' and 'Princess Coronation' pacific (4-6-2 wheel arrangement ) classes of the 1930s both topped 40,000lbs.

The London & North Eastern Railway, would have to wait until 1947 to take the title by only 130lbs with Arthur Peppercorn's superb A2 pacifics at 40,430lbs.
